Lindy: Director
“I believe in working with purpose, a strong sense of integrity and incorporating intuition, creativity and spirit at work – and, creating this consultancy provided me with this opportunity,” says South African born Lindy Briginshaw.
Lindy has invaluable experience in project management, process facilitation, capacity-building, human rights and good governance, gaining much of this experience whilst in the employ of the European Union funded Parliamentary Support Programme. Prior to this appointment, Lindy worked for the Greater Durban Metropolitan Negotiating Forum, a capacity-building project set up to train and prepare councillors for the first local government elections post-1994.Lindy has an undergraduate degree in Development Administration and International Politics, obtained from the University of South Africa, and is currently completing her Master’s degree in Philosophy, focusing on Community and Development at the University of Stellenbosch.When not at work, you can find Lindy focusing on her other passions such as photojournalism, travel to unusual destinations and yoga.
Joan: Researcher
Joan came to Cape Town in 2008 after graduating from the University of Virginia with a BA degree in History, Foreign Affairs, and Spanish. While living in Cape Town, she has worked with refugees to document human rights abuses, and with an HIV positive men’s support group for a research project that investigated the relationship between AIDS, masculinity, and poverty in the Cape Town region. Joan completed an HIV/AIDS advocacy internship with the Treatment Action Campaign in 2008, and in 2010 conducted field research in Mpumalanga and Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa, with Development Works to evaluate a health media programme in public clinics. Her work experience also includes internships in community health clinics in Cape Town and a position with a Cape Town-based internship company that places foreign students with volunteer work in Cape Town. Joan enjoys writing and research. She is particularly interested in public health and infectious disease, and plans to attend medical school to become a doctor. Joan joined the Development Works Research Unit in September 2011.
Joan hails from Seattle, Washington, and enjoys all things outdoors: running, hiking, biking, and more. She studied abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and speaks Spanish and beginner’s Portuguese. Most of all, she enjoys traveling and seeing the world.
